This is an old photograph from a German Erzgebirge workshop. 'Erzgebirge' is not a company but actually a region of formerly East Germany where various toy workshops have been making hand-made wooden toys for the past 200 years or more. Here in the States the most famous Erzgebirge creations are probably the Nutcrackers (that you now see
prancing about on ballet stages) which were once little wooden toys carved as a hobby and for children, eventually becoming a mainstay of the Erzgebirge regional economy - the plentiful forests and long dark winters were well suited for toymaking and storytelling. From these same forests came many of our most famous childhood German fairy tales. |

About the Dwindl Workshop
The Dwindl workshop was formed in the Spring of 2006 to help discover and create some of the little wooden mysteries in life - angels, soldiers, little people and animals that we love. We have a large personal collection of vintage German Erzgebirge and will someday soon be making our own handmade wooden Dwindl figures (the elves just need a bit more time to work out the production issues). We love this little handmade world and hope to share it with you. In this day and age when everything seems to be mass-made by machines, the thrill of a handmade toy or collectible is vanishing and we hope to bring it back again soon. Contact us here:
